Trash to Treasure

Today is such a beautiful day. I'm going to ignore the fact that pollen is my nemesis and it's everywhere. That's just a byproduct of spring, so I really can't complain. Anyhoo, after running a couple of much needed errands (like getting an oil change) I discovered a few things: (1) the Walmart that I went to to get an oil change has put back their fabric section and I could get some solid fabrics for linings, (2) Panera Bread had a line of customers that were actually waiting outside the door so needless to say, I chose not to eat there *sigh*, and (3) getting up a little extra on Saturday (although I love to sleep in) can be quite fruitful; nothing wrong with a little "me time", even if you're just getting an oil change and a couple of grocery items.

After I got home, my mom asked me to take her garbage to the dump. (Yes, we both live outside the city limits so we take our own trash to the dumpsters - no city taxes paid here.) Surprisingly enough, I spotted something truly beautiful just sitting there in the lot. Yes, it was a 3-panel screen for hanging photos. I checked it out and the only missing parts were the cardboard or cork backings that keep the pictures in. Who can't find a way around this minor setback? So, I grabbed it up. The garbage parking lot attendant guy (sorry, just don't know the official name for that job) said that it had been placed there less than an hour ago. I'm rinsing the pollen off then I'll save it for an upcoming set of projects. So excited!

Sandhills Camellia Show 2012

On Saturday, February 18, 2012, the Sandhills Camellia Society sponsored its eighth annual Sandhills Camellia Show. As a member of the Sandhills Photography Club, I was afforded the opportunity to photograph the camellias at the show. Little did I know that the show would be held indoors and all the camellias, besides the ones being sold, would be cuttings.

Nonetheless, the camellias were so beautiful! And the spectators were so knowledgeable about soil types, and fertilizers, and greenhouses, and all the perfect conditions to produce beautiful camellias such as the ones on display.

Attending this festival also afforded me the opportunity to meet some very interesting people and helped to appease my itch for photographing flowers during this season. However, that itch won't truly be satisfied until I can photograph some camellias in their natural habitat. Trust me; I'm already making plans...

Homemade Chicken Pot Pie

I've been craving chicken pot pie lately. Maybe because of these rain spells, maybe because it's such a comfort food, or maybe because it's an all-in-one dish which is something I love. I've never made a chicken pot pie, but I have made chicken casseroles, so I decided to do my own thing, with the inspiration of Ayana's Chicken Pot Pie vlog in my nearby memory.

Here's my version:

Homemade Chicken Pot Pie
Ingredients:
2 chicken breasts, boiled, deboned, and shredded
1 can of cream of mushroom soup
1 can of cream of chicken soup
1 cup of frozen mixed vegetables (corn, beans, carrots)
chicken broth
half-and-half
salt and pepper to taste
2 frozen pie crusts, thawed

Directions:
Cooking the chicken:
Season two chicken breasts with salt and pepper. Then boil until done in chicken broth. Be sure to season the broth. I use Herbox Sodium-Free Chicken broth packets, so I always have to add some salt to taste. Remove chicken from broth, allow to cool, then debone. Set aside. Reserve some broth for the sauce portion of this dish; the rest can be frozen for later use. * I boil my chicken in broth to add more flavor to the broth.

Preparing the sauce:
Over medium-low heat, add cream of mushroom, cream of chicken and broth to a medium saucepan. Allow to heat through until all creams are well blended. Add shredded chicken and frozen vegetables. Then add half-and-half until desired consistency is reached. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Preparing the crust:
Unroll and place one pie crust in the bottom of a baking dish. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place pan with crust in oven while oven is preheating. Allow to brown slightly on the bottom, then remove. Pour chicken/sauce mixture into baking dish. Unroll and place the top crust over the mixture. Break away pieces that overlap pan and use them to cover spaces on the sides of the pan. Cut a slit in the center of the top pie crust. Place in oven and bake between 45 minutes to 1 hour. If dish is done and pie crust isn't brown enough, brown underneath the broiler for a few minutes. Be careful not to turn away, not even for a second, or you will have what my family calls a "Cajun" styled dish. Trust me!

* The next time I make this dish, I'm going to try it using the Bisquick Mix that you pour over the sauce. It bakes up to such a lovely crust. I've never tried it on a chicken pot pie, but I have on some quick cobbler dishes. Yum-O!

See That None Goeth To Waste

So, while prepping for this past arts showcase, although I love my crocheted pieces, I really wanted to see more paper crafted and sewn items for this event. Because I thought my sewing machine was also acting dysfunctional, just like my computer, I decided to focus on paper-crafted items. (The reality about my sewing machine was that I learned to leave my metal bobbins in my metal machine and my plastic bobbins in my plastic machine. I'm so quick to switch between machines and carry my bobbins with me and since the plastic ones don't work in my metal machine at all and they do on the other, I just used metal. Lesson learned.)

Anyhoo, since I didn't have any access to any of my stored digital photographs (due to the absence of my computer), I decided to make use of many of my test prints and such and create bookmarks!

So, basically, I found prints I liked in some way, cut a 6" x 2" strip of the portion of the image I liked, then used a rounded-edge corner paper cutter to round off the edges. I repeated this same action on some recycled cardboard pieces I found at a scrap store a while back (finally putting that purchase to use). Afterwards, since I'm no longer afraid of the spray adhesive, I used the spray adhesive to adhere the photo print onto the cardboard backing. Then, voila! Bookmarks were made.

For this project, I chose my tulip prints from one of my botanical garden trips and also an artistic print of cabbage leaves.

The project was super simple and it made me feel good to use up supplies already found in the house. Yes, I'm doing my part to see that none goeth to waste!

Monday's Feature: Joan Blackwell

Meet Joan Blackwell.

AE: Who are you and what is it that you do/make?

JB: I am Joan Blackwell - Proud Army Mom, Lumbee, and Gourd Artist.

AE: How did you get started/What is the motivation behind your work?

JB: Eleven years ago, while visiting a lady friend, Miss Louis, who lives in TN, I saw a gourd hanging in one of her trees. We talked about it and she gave it to me. I took it home, cleaned it up and painted on it. I took it back to her as a gift, and that is how it all started. Gourds are a wonderful medium to paint on. After they dry out they have the consistency of wood.

Since then I have been interviewed several times by newspapers, a featured artist on TV, gave a presentation at UNCP, and continue to teach classes when I have time. As a full time Art Education major at UNCP, I still love to paint on gourds and look forward to summer break to complete new artistic expressions. I paint because I love too.

After retiring from a Department of Defense contracting position in 2000; I knew I wanted to find a hobby and volunteer work to keep me busy. As a Mom to an Army pilot, who frequently travels overseas, I found this outlet helped occupy my time and keep me focused in a positive manner.

I am not a major production artist. Most of my art has been given as presents and I have sold art internationally and nationally. After painting 408 pieces of art, I only have 40 left. I better get busy and paint some more soon. I still enjoy setting up at festivals and have several exhibits in Pembroke, NC. If you like, call me, and I can teach you this technique in my art studio located in my home. You will need two hours to complete the art. I will provide the supplies. The fee is negotiable. Bring a friend and the fee is reduced.

River Roots Recap

So this past Friday evening, I had the pleasure of being able to vend at the River Roots Emerging Arts Showcase. When I first stepped into the University Center, I was in awe of all of the lovely work already present. Minute by minute, moment by moment, as more artists brought in their handiwork, the room just continued to transform. Beautiful paintings, photographs, handpainted gourds, carvings, jewelry. Simply amazing. And really, from beginning to end, the whole night was filled with such amazing talent from the performing artists as well. All the singers of all ages sounded professional and you were drawn in by every word and beat of the drum during the storytelling. A true art scene.

This vendor traded one of her butterfly gourds for my beanie/neckwarmer sets for her son and a photographic bookmark. :-)

I was able to share a space beside some vendors I met during my December vending event, which was lovely. Such great company and I couldn't resist buying two of her limoncello cookies and chocolate brownie bites. My mom and I will definitely share those.

My vending goal is to still sale those items that I have made previously as well as add new items that are a part of my new style. After networking with fellow crafters and listening to what customers like I think I will also use vending as an opportunity to sale items that I might not necessarily put in my shop. Every crowd is different but I always like to get feedback so I know how to better market myself and what I make.

One of the highlights of Friday night was getting a chance to meet Jessica, who reigns all the way from China and had only been here for 4 days! Such an amazing sweet spirit. :-)

Another highlight of Friday night was getting an invitation from an arts council member to participate in a street festival next month. A lot of the customers and vendors say they will also be there and will look for us (my vending neighbors and myself). I have a lot of ideas now that I believe will help me along the vending way. But one thing I know for sure...I've got to get more organized to do this kind of work!

Shimmy Shimmy Infinity Scarf

One of the items I've been wanting to make for a while is a sewn infinity scarf. Some time ago, I came across DIY Raven's video tutorial on how she makes her circle scarves.

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you're well aware of my fabric stash. So, in an effort to destash, I thought this scarf project was perfect. Now I will admit that I often browse the remnant sections of the fabric departments just in case I find a cool piece of fabric. And I think I did when I came across exactly one yard of this bright pink sequined material. I will admit that sewing on stretchy, sequined material did pose a challege at first, but an adjustment in tension and an occasion wiping down of the appropriate needle to remove the gluey gunk that tends to build up on it solved my problems. I am quite pleased with this project and will be taking it with me to the arts show.

I would be tempted to keep this scarf for myself, but even though I have a heart for the color pink, this shade was a bit too much for me to wear (IMO), but I love to look at it. :-) I hope it finds a happy home.

I can see more of these scarves and variations of these scarves in my future. Thanks, Raven!

Notecards in Action!

Spring is technically around the corner even though the reality is that spring has definitely already sprung! Last Easter my mom was given a beautiful Easter Lily. During that time, I was staying with my parents while I recuperated and so as soon as I was able to get a hold of my camera, I made sure to capture this beautiful flower before it died. I call this image, "He is Risen."

Originally I had one or two larger prints of this image dry-mounted for a photography competition but now those prints reside in my home. Finally I decided that I liked the image so much that I would print 4"x6" prints to make notecards out of. And so that's what I did. (See the tutorial for tips.)

These "He is Risen" prints are mounted on the front of acid-free black cardstock notecards. In the inside, I have adhered white cardstock so that a special pen wouldn't have to be used to be able to write on black paper. On the back you will find my label and copyright information. On the envelopes, I also adhered shipping labels that have decorative cut-out edges on each corner.

I love black and white images and to-date this one is by far my favorite, in terms of still life objects. I have 10 of these card/envelope sets made and they are ready for the upcoming arts showcase in March. Whatever doesn't sell there will go in my Etsy shop just in time for Easter. :-)

In addition to the "He is Risen" cards, I'm also taking 3 other sets of notecards to the upcoming show. Two of those sets are florals and one is of the frozen pods. I had these cards printed some time earlier in the year and now I'm finally debuting them.

The "He is Risen" cards will be sold individually, but these other cards will be sold individually or in a set of 8. I will allow customers to mix and match the ones they want.

Photo Notecards Tutorial

I've been promising myself to make notecards out of my photographs for a long while now. The thing is, it's been really difficult to find a (notecards) printer that I love with a price that I could afford. When I say afford, I mean that if the price I pay the printer is the price I wanted to sell the cards for, then that's not affordable. Or if I have to order 300 of the same print to get the price I want to pay, then that's a no-win situation too. So, needless to say, I haven't printed many cards.

My present-day alternative has been to make my own cards out of professional prints instead.

Disclaimer: I am not a scrapbooker or stamper or die-hard papercrafter; just a girl who will try a new craftform as a means to an end. lol

Materials:
Make sure all materials are acid-free.

cardstock cards and envelopes
double-sided scrapbooking tape*
cardstock (for inside if the card is too dark to write on)
photographs (feel free to splurge a little; I always choose a professional printer and opt for special paper and coatings depending on the photograph. For this one, I also had the photographs printed with a white border.)

* I almost used a spray adhesive, but I got nervous after I read all the cautions and such. Call me chicken, 'eh.

Directions:
This is basically what I did:

Placed double-sided tape on the back of the photographs.
Removed the top layer of the paper covering the tape to expose the adhesive, then carefully placed the photographs on the front cover of the notecard. No margin for error here - this tape is super permanent!
Adhered cardstock on the inside of the notecard, leaving a 1/2" margin on each side. Yep, my cards are black and if I didn't do this step, you'd have to use a special metallic pen to show your writing. (Guess what? I un-chickened out and used the spray adhesive for adhering this cardstock on the inside. I just turned my ceiling fans on.)
Adhered my clear label on the back of the cards. Gotta keep my credits you know. :-)

Voila! Now if I were that scrapbooker, stamper, or die-hard papercrafter, I would embellish the mess out of these cards, but I wanted to keep it pretty simple.

These are my "He is Risen" notecards. I'm definitely taking these to my next vending event and I'm thinking of making more to put in my shop online. Now I better get a jump start on my florals. I've got lots more white notecards to use and many pretty prints. :-)

On the Horizon

If you've noticed, my Etsy shop has remained empty for quite some time - mostly because I have had my heart and mind on other crafty pursuits that haven't come into fruition yet and partly because I've set my eyes on vending this year and using Etsy as a true back-up online shop, instead of my main way to sell handmade items.

Recently, I was accepted to vend at the River Roots Emerging Arts Showcase, sponsored by the River Roots Arts Guild. The mission of the Arts Guild is to "support, expose, and illuminate the arts in our town, county, state, and universe through various venues for economic development, education, enjoyment and healing." I'm just so excited to be able to take part in this first-time event and to be surrounded by other local artists as well as learn more about the Lumbee Indian culture through participation in this event.

I've been working to have some new items for my display and the showcase deadline is fast approaching, so your well-wishes are greatly appreciated. Upcoming posts will highlight some of the handmade items I will bring.

As I'm typing on my very own computer, I can hardly contain my joy. Seriously. I have one of the biggest, dumbest smiles pasted all over my face because I have just gotten my computer back, restored to its original state. All virures, malware, and that other icky stuff are all gone. My Google applications are fully functioning. I can blog again!

It felt like some kind of weird withdrawal not to have my computer. At first it was kind of blissful, then it became quite difficult, and finally I had become a bit of a pesk because I was getting behind in my actual work work. But I am so thankful for the Tech Dept at Staples for solving these problems for me. Now, I have the task of re-installing all of my software that was added on since this original computer purchase.

Thank you all for being patient with me. I appreciate the comments on my blog (even in my absence) and the emails to check on me. And now perhaps life as we knew it will continue. LOL

Computer Woes

Just letting you know that I'll be MIA for a bit. My computer is acting dysfunctional and is in obvious need of a therapeutic session. I called Staples and found out they're offering free PC Tune Ups this week. This looks like my big break...unless of course what's wrong with my computer falls outside of the Tune Up domain. Oh well, we'll cross that bridge when we get there. Also, for many of you, I haven't been able to comment on your blogs. Some of my Google features have also been acting a muck, so that's why I've been silent. Maybe the technicians have a magic wand and can fix that too. In the meantime, no matter what your craft form may be, ....

Monday's Feature: Robert Trujillo

Meet Robert Trujillo.

AE: Who are you?

RT: My name is Robert Trujillo and I sometimes go by the name "Tres". I'm a visual artist from Oakland California.I am a man of color, a father, a music lover, and a lover of solutions to challenges.

AE: What is it that you do/make?

RT: I have taken on a lot of titles over the years. Most recently illustrator and muralist, but I'm feeling more like a storyteller lately. I tell my stories on walls, paper, and other things. When I do illustration or crafty stuff like light switch plates I often work alone, but when I paint murals I paint them with my crew, The Trust Your Struggle Collective. Besides that, I make little things on my Etsy store to sell.

AE: How did you get started/What is the motivation behind your work?

RT: I have been doing artwork for a long time, since childhood. But I started to take my mural/illustration work very serious within the last 10 years. I started as a little kid making drawing, then I became a teenager obsessed with Graffiti art. Then, I began to fuse the idea of figures, letters, and political messages into my work in my early twenties. Throughout my mid twenties I became very interested in stories that not only featured people of color, but told stories that had yet to be told.

My motivation for doing what I do is kind of spiritual at times. I practice my art, I believe in it deeply.It brings my solace, happiness, strength, and a voice that cant always speak with words. I like to paint murals or large pieces because it its free to the viewer; anyone can come and see it just by walking by. And if a person really appreciates it, they'll tell you so. That motivates me. I'm also greatly motivated by telling stories about my life and from my imagination. If i'm not careful, I can get caught up in a "reactive" , responsive, or frustrated state when it comes to the state of storytelling in book, animation, or film format. So instead of complaining or highlighting what is "bad", I want to imagine the world I want to see, and show it to anyone who will listen.

Twisted Glory

So, this past weekend, I finally had the opportunity to henna my hair and experience my first attempt at using indigo. I have been curious about indigo for a while, but a bit skeptical since it is color, albeit natural color, but I just wanted to do it correctly.

You've seen my henna regimen and I would have loved to show you my indigo one but I dared not stain my camera in an attempt to do so. Simply put, here's what I did:

Henna and Indigo Treatment

Applied henna to my hair for about 4 hours.
Rinsed most, but not all of the henna out. Apparently indigo needs something to adhere to and henna is the best option.
Mixed enough warm water to 100g of indigo until I had a yogurt-like consistency.
Applied the indigo to my hair in small sections making sure to get full coverage. Indigo was left in for 2 hours.
Rinsed the indigo out. Rinsed the indigo out. Rinsed the indigo out. (Yeah, apparently, I kept missing spots; my hair is so so thick.)
** Some tutorials suggested not to do this, but I did it anyways: I washed my hair using my Shea Moisture Moisture Retention Shampoo then completed a deep conditioning session with Shea Moisture's Deep Treatment Masque. (Some say that doing this will not allow the indigo to give you the darkest black color because you're washing it out. They suggest just rinsing out the indigo, applying a moisturizer, and possibly washing it a few days later. I know my hair and I disregarded this step and washed anyways. So what if I don't get the jettest of blacks; I just want to make sure the stuff is out of my head.)
Can you believe this? I actually purchased a hand-held blow dryer and lightly blow-dried my hair (which I haven't done in years) before twisting my hair. I needed it stretched because of time constraints and a special project I was doing. (Details on that later.)
Finally to twist, I applied a little of the Deep Treatment Masque and sealed my hair with the Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I already know I love that product. And the lavender scent is fabulous!
Wearing a twist-out until the next wash day. (To keep the style fresh, at night I'm lightly misting with rosewater and retwisting using a light oil like jojoba.)

I've gotten a lot of compliments on this style and it is one of my favorite styles, although it can be a bit time consuming. It's also a hairstyle that truly depends on the weather. Any signs of rain and I might as well hang it up because the moisture will cause major shrinkage!

Ok, onto the big reveal...

Whenever my twists (especially in the bangs area) get to where they won't hold the twist much longer, I just pull the bangs back into a headband and keep on rocking the style. In these photos, the twists are four days old.

Classic Tomato Soup w/Grilled Cheese Sandwich + another

I can't shake the soup kick that I've been on lately, so instead of fighting against the urge to get my soup on, I've decided to embrace it. My latest soup has been the Classic Tomato Soup. I've tasted a tomato soup perhaps only once before. I used canned tomato soups in other soups or had tomato soup with other food items in there, but never just a plain old tomato soup.

I saw a recipe on Pinterest (of course) and remember I'm trying to be not just a pinner, but a doer, so I have to make some of the recipes I pin. This one was definitely not a disappointment. One double-surprise was that the dish called for Pomi's boxed tomatoes (surprise #1) and I was actually able to find them (surprise #2) - on sale (that was just an added bonus).

So what do you eat with a tomato soup? My first thought was a grilled cheese sandwich, so that's exactly what I made. We might be having more of a spring-like winter, but my freezer is stocking up on soups for a reason. You can never count out Mother Nature. :-)

Classic Tomato Soup

* BTW: I actually did puree this soup. Normally, I skip that step because I don't want to deal with hot soup in a blender and I don't have an immersion blender; however, I made this soup on one day and pureed it in the blender on another. Problem solved.

I think I'll freeze some of this soup in servings small enough to use as the base for other tomato-based soups and ditch some of the canned soups. Oooh, this is something worth trying during the summer when tomatoes are more abundant. Do I need to get my mini-garden going again this summer?

And while I'm on the subject of tomato-based soups, I need to add that somehow I forgot to tell you about the Taco Soup I made about two weeks ago. Rotel tomatoes (hot)
taco seasoning packet

Directions:
Dumped it all in the crockpot and cooked it on low for 8-10 hours. Topped each serving with a dollop of sour cream and shredded cheese. Ate it with Tostito scoops. Delicious!

* If I had to do it all over again (and didn't have to go grocery shopping specifically for this), I would have added black beans as well.

This past weekend, a friend of mine and I took a road trip to the western part of Virginia. It was one of those let's-make-the-most-of-this-even-though-we're-here-officially-for-business trips. Although I've not traveled to every part of my state, it's amazing how you can immediately tell when you've crossed the state border. In an instant, everything looks different. The roads, the scenery, everything. With each curve of the road, I could tell that we were somehow climbing gradually up the mountains. People talk about the beach as if it's the most relaxing place in the world, but me, I prefer the quiet of the mountains....as long as I'm not snowed in. :-)

We drove up at night and snacked on homemade trail mix (recipe to follow) along the way. The mountain air was crisp and clear. And with the aide of a GPS, the places we chose to visit were relatively easy to find. (Do you remember taking road trips with nothing but a map? I think we were smarter then; using true map-reading skills and common sense, but with the GPS, there's not much thinking involved. But I digress...) On this trip we had a few weird encounters, probably because we had the word "outsider" stamped on our foreheads, but other than that, no problems.

On our way back, we stopped at this mall, and one of the first stores I saw was Tui Na Master Inc. There, they specialized in acupressure and reflexology. And they were having a sale. We promised to come back, and we did, although I'm the only one who got a service. I asked for the 10 minute service, but the man looked at me and said, "30 minutes." "No, I'm not sure I have time...," I went on. But he looked straight at me and repeated, "30 minutes. Better." So who am I to argue? I got the 30 minute service. And he was right! He kept focusing on my neck area from time to time, but that was no surprise to me. Afterwards, he said, "Your neck. So tight!" My stress goes to my neck and let's not forget that I carry my purse, my tote bags for work, etc. It's a wonder I'm not lopsided!

I had never heard of acupressure before, but after that service, I'm definitely looking into it. If I weren't almost 4 hours away, I'd go back there again. Maybe next time!

And as promised, my easy peasy trail mix recipe:

Libby's Trail Mix Recipe
Ingredients:
2 c dry roasted peanuts (no-salt)
1 c dry-roasted almonds (no-salt)
1/2 c dried cranberries
1/2 c raisins
1 c dried pineapple (chopped in bite-size pieces)
1 c semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:
Mix all the ingredients in an air-tight container. Shake to combine. Enjoy!

* Of course, Trail Mix is one of those types of dishes where you put in whatever you like. I used what I had. Making my own Trail Mix prevents me from having to pick out the ingredients in the store-bought ones that I don't like. :-)

K. Rock's Chicken Pesto Pasta

The great thing about following a lot of blogs is coming across great recipes and/or craft ideas. It's such an inspiration. Some time ago, I stumbled upon K. Rock's blog - Food Stamp. Her blog features food that gets her stamp of approval.

A dish that caught my eye was this chicken pesto pasta. I don't know if there's an official name, but that's what I'm calling this dish. With her permission, I'm giving you K.Rock's recipe.

Chicken Pesto Pasta

Ingredients:
chicken sausage
bow-tie (farfalle) pasta
jarred pesto sauce
baby tomatoes
salt & pepper (to taste)

Directions:
Cook the pasta according to package directions. In a separate pot/pan, cook the chicken sausage. After both are done, combine the ingredients in a pot and add your jarred pesto sauce. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Then add your halved baby tomatoes to the dish and warm through.

* My mods:
First off, I used the mini farfalle pasta. My chicken sausage was pre-cooked, but frozen, so I opted to boil mine. I removed the casing because I've never liked casing on sausages. Then I chopped the sausage into quartered pieces. I didn't use the tomatoes because I didn't have any, but I know that the addition of the tomatoes would be a lovely combination of flavors. Plus an even more appealing photo.

I will say that although I had never had chicken sausage before, the kind I used for this dish was sooo good! It was Al Fresco Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage. There were bits of apple in there and a hint of maple syrup. Too tasty.

So here's the dish. Super quick and very tasty!

AE: Who are you?

NL: Niki Lopez. I am a stay at home Mom, multi-disciplined Visual artist, and Graphic designer. I also teach art twice a week to children at a local non profit center for the arts.

AE: What is it that you do/make?

NL: Commercially I am a contract graphic and web designer. I am a painter, photographer, and all around creative person. My work has been exhibited through out South Florida, New York, and California. Last year, my art was juried into a group show at the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art. I have also curated and produced several art exhibits and events in South Florida. Currently, I am working on a new series of small works and small recycled works of art that uses marketing flyers repurposed as small canvases. Made specifically for my Etsy Shop. (blog post here). Some of my work has been donated to certain non profits to use as a part of their fundraiser initiatives. Commissioned works include murals, portraits, and custom painted converse. I also do some photography, digital art, as well as painting live at events.

AE: How did you get started/What is the motivation behind your work?

NL: Ever since I could hold a crayon in my hand I have been doing art. My mother stockpiled Crayola 64 and drawing paper. She always encouraged me that it was better to make a card with my own art and poems than to buy from the store. I went to school and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Graphic Design, however I have always had a passion for art, and though I'm primarily self taught and experimental, I have been painting for over 6 years. My first official art show came shortly after moving into a art community where I have been since 2008.

My motivation behind my work is the emotions, the story telling, the research, and the process of making the work. Sometimes I am portraying different parts of me or my story or a direct reflection of a mood or feeling. Others are more research and educational as I love to explore and include various cultures and stories not always known or talked about. I love to paint. I love finally relaxing into a rhythm of brush strokes and color and often times guided by music. Some of my work has celestial connection or references aliens but not in a spooky way more so as a part of life, evolution, and just further exploring the notion of other life forms outside of our planet. Sometimes its reflecting me and a feeling of being different.

Sometimes surprises are good. Sometimes surprises are bad. Aren't you thankful for the good surprises? Well, recently, I received one of those good surprises. I went to the mailbox and noticed a slip indicating that I had a package of some kind. And it would be during a holiday weekend, so I had to wait extra to reveal the mystery. I was so excited. Who would be sending me anything unannounced like this?

After it's long travel (one month!) and my short wait (since I didn't know it was coming), I received the most amazing surprise....all the way from Mexico! Yes, my dear friend, sent me a package of yummy woven fabrics in traditional Mexican style and some more of the mercerized cotton in beautiful, bright colors. I have wrapped myself up in the fabric more than once and dreamed of what it will become. :-)

Butternut Pumpkin Soup

Some time recently, I became a follower of Nikki's blog, Everything Under the Moon. On her blog she has link parties on Mondays for different things like recipes, crafts, tutorials, etc. I've only participated in two link parties on her blog, but in doing so, I've come across some really lovely blogs. On one of them, I stumbled across this recipe for Butternut Pumpkin Soup.

For a while I kind of fell off of the cooking/baking wagon, but lately I've been filling my stride. You know I love recipes where I can use the ingredients I already have. Now I can see the beauty in having a stocked pantry and keeping it that way. The only thing I happened not to have was a butternut squash, but that was an easy remedy.

So without further ado, let me introduce you to the Butternut Pumpkin Squash Soup recipe found on the "Little Rays of Sunshine" blog.

You'll need the following ingredients, then head on over to "Little Rays of Sunshine" to get the deets on this dish:

unsalted butter

extra-virgin olive oil

a small onion

pumpkin puree

butternut squash

low sodium chicken broth

kosher salt

black pepper

nutmeg

heavy cream

p.s. Doesn't this dish kinda look like baby food? Still good though.

Choco-Banana Overnight Oats

When I was completing the 20/20 Challenge, I was always on the look-out for quick, healthy, and delicious breakfast solutions. Some time ago, I stumbled across The Healthy Foodie blog, and one of the first recipes I noticed was the one for Choco-Banana Overnight Oats. What are overnight oats, I wondered. What is millet? Chia seeds? Is that like the seeds from the Chia Pet toy? Buckwheat groats? What?

So, I made a trip to Whole Foods and purchased what I could find. So I got the millet and the chia seeds. I left the buckwheat groats alone, as well as the carob chips. Not that I wasn't willing to try, but I was looking into cost-effectiveness. The millet could be purchased by the pound so I could get a little sampling, but I honestly didn't want to pay a lot for something I wasn't sure I would even like.

Choco-Banana Overnight Oats
(serves 1)

So basically, here are the ingredients I used:

½ ripe banana, thinly sliced
½ cup old fashioned rolled oats
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp millet
1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup boiling water

2 tbsp chocolate flavored protein powder (I had some chocolate flavored Boost protein powder in the pantry - go figure)
¼ cup milk (I use the original-flavored almond milk)

To not steal Sonia's thunder, please visit her blog post to see how these ingredients should be combined. But seriously, it was super quick, quite delicious, and something I will try - but not everyday. I love chocolate, and even though this chocolate dish is not sweet (except for the little sweetness from the protein powder and the banana), a girl can only do so much.

Coping with "Winter's" Chill

Recently I received an order from someone who needs to keep her neck bundled up during the winter months so that she can help prevent her throat from becoming sore. It's interesting because that sounds so much like me. People look at me strangely when I'm bundled up with the least bit of a draft. I've even been known to sleep with a scarf wrapped around my neck. Yeah, it may be weird, but it helps! LOL

So, I shared a few patterns I saw with my customer and she decided on this one...in black. It actually was a really quick crochet. Like a "less than 2-hour road trip and I was done" kind of quick. It can be worn open like the traditional cowl, or you can button it up to swaddle your neck in yarny goodness.

This cowl is off to its new owner and I hope it helps beat the not-so-winter-like, winter chill. (It's more like fall, early spring here.)

Gee. Now I kinda want one for myself....

SN: I am Shayla C. Nunnally, an alumna of North Carolina Central University.
AE: What is it that you do?

SN: I am an associate professor in the Department of Political Science and the Institute for African American Studies at the University of Connecticut. I teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in African American politics. I also specialize in research on African American political behavior and public opinion. My research focuses on racial socialization, political socialization, black identity, and political trust. I also am involved in research that explores interracial/intraracial relations and attitudes.

AE: How did you get started/What is the motivation behind your work?

SN: I became interested in African American politics and how black Americans learn about race (racial socialization) when I realized that in everyday conversations black Americans from across the country many times commonly knew cultural practices, sayings, and norms about life and black people. I also noticed the extent to which I heard many black people express their distrust in various aspects of their lives. As a research interest, I wanted to know how much race and racism influenced their life experiences.

Baby It's Cold Outside

Over the Christmas holidays, we were pleased that my brother and SIL were able to drive down and stay for about a week. During that time, Mona and I had a blast in Charlotte, going from shop to shop together. Don't worry; we didn't spend all we didn't have (lol) but it was fun.

I've wanted to make Mona something for awhile, but just didn't know what to make. So, I was so glad when she asked if I would make her a hat with a flower on it. Who knew that's what she wanted? It's nice when people can pick out their own yarn because then you know that they really will enjoy their handmade item and have something to match it with. So, Mona picked out this super soft black fiesta yarn from Hobby Lobby and I finally finished making her hat. Then I realized that there was just enough yarn in that skein for a neckwarmer too, so my dear SIL should be all cozy during this winter season. My brother already phoned and said they had snow in the area, so this duo has recently taken flight.

I don't think she'll mind me trying on her hat set. :-)

It feels really nice to mark one item off my "Keeping Promises" list. *wink*

Afro Martha's "Can't Wait For Fall Muffins"

One of the recipes I discovered when I first started following Yetunde of the Afro Martha blog were her "Can't Wait For Fall Muffins". I was determined to try them, but as a procrastinator, it just didn't happen. Until now. Maybe I'm in a baking mood. Maybe I was just glad to have the ingredients. Maybe I just like the idea of Fall/Autumn any time of the year. But for whatever the reason, I haven't gotten these muffins off my mind for a while now and so I finally made them.

There's no need to write the recipe when the recipe is clearly written on her blog. Plus if you go over there, she has created a printable recipe card for this recipe. Gotta love those graphic designers!

I followed the recipe to the T, but where it says "chopped walnuts (optional)", I opted for them. [Don't you love how I'm starting to like nuts (some nuts)? My taste buds must be changing these days.] Also, in Yetunde's recipe where it says 2 cups of "dried cranberries, cherries, or raisins", I put in 1 cup of raisins and 1 cup of dried cranberries.

My batch created 12 regular sized muffins and one muffin loaf. The batter had the consistency of cookie dough. The final muffins were dense and yet moist and yummy, and so filling! Gotta love those spices that truly remind you of the Fall season, even though we're experiencing a Fall-like Winter.

I'll keep the muffins at home and share the loaf at work. Can't hoard all this goodness to myself. Thanks, Yetunde for a great recipe!

Simple Sesame Noodles

Ok, you know I love, I mean LOVE to shop in International Food Stores. We don't have one where I live (and maybe that's a good thing) because I would probably be in there every.single.day, even if I didn't buy anything. It just really fascinates me as to all the ingredients that can be found all over the world. Being in an International Food Store makes me feel like I've stepped outside of my everyday life and stepped into a whole other world, depending on what aisle I'm on.

Suffice to say, when I do have the chance to shop at International Food Stores, I may even bring home an item that I have no idea what I'll do with it. I just get it and wait and see. On my last shopping trip, I purchased a package of Hakubaku's organic somen noodles. And finally with the recipe featured below, I had the opportunity to use them.

So what's the recipe? The Pioneer Woman's Simple Sesame Noodles. I didn't find this simple recipe through her blog, but rather through Pinterest of course. And since I'm determined not to be a pinner only, but also a doer, I set out to make this dish. I had everything already, minus the green onions, so this was a winner!

The only modifications I used were these organic somen noodles and I used 1 tsp of hot chili paste instead of the 1/2 tsp of hot oil (which I don't even know what that is). Plus I sprinkled in some sesame seeds. Let me repeat, these noodles were soooo good!

Enamored by the pretty picture in the pinned image, I had to create my own set. :-)

Envelope-Back Pillow Case Tutorial

Some time, a long time ago actually, I started making a quilted pillow top. I guess you could say it was my venture into the world of quilting, but it basically ended with that project! lol I didn't know a thing about quilting; I just thought, "I'll just sew these squares together and voila, it'll be just fine!" Little did I know that it wasn't that simple. I put that project away and didn't pull it out again until this week. Monday to be exact.

I was very pleased with the final outcome, despite the wayward seams of the "quilted" front (I know how to fix that now), that I decided to share a tutorial with you.

How to Sew an Envelope-Back Pillow Case

Materials:
pillow form (mine was 12"x16")
fabric
basic sewing supplies (sewing machine, thread, pins...)

Directions:
For the front piece:
Cut one pieces of fabric for the front with sides measuring 1" larger than your pillow form. (So, since my pillow form was 12"x16", my front was 13"x17") This will allow for a snug fit, using a 1/2" seam allowance.

For the back pieces:
For the back, you will have two pieces.

Cut one piece at 1" wider than your pillow form, and 2" longer than half the width of your form. This will be your bottom top piece. (So mine was 17" x 8" since half of 12" is 6" and 6" + 2" = 8".)

Cut one piece at 1" wider than your pillow form, and 3" longer than half the width of your form. This will be your bottom back piece. (So mine was 17" x 9" since half of 12" is 6" and 6" + 3" = 9".)

Preliminary Prep:
For nice clean edges, fold 1/4" of the longest edges of a back piece. Iron down. Then fold that hem again 1/4". Iron down. Sew along this hem. Repeat on the other back piece.

Assembly:
With right sides facing, pin the back top piece to the pillow front. Then pin the back bottom piece onto the pillow front. It should lay on top of the pillow front so that when the case is turned to the right side, the pillow back piece is on the inside of the envelope back. Also, make sure that the envelope seams are straight.

Place sewing machine needle along any of the pillow case sides. Do not start in a corner. Sew down about an inch and then backstitch to reinforce seam. Sew around the entire pillow form. When you have reached your starting place, backstitch again.

Finishing Touches:
Turn pillow case inside out and iron along seams for a nice, crisp look. Insert pillow form and enjoy!

Other tidbits:
I made this pillow form for myself. I am super picky about seams (even the ones you cannot see), but since it was for me, I did not pick this battle. Had I picked it, I would suggest that you serge the inside seams for a more professional look and to keep edges from fraying. At this point I do not own a Serger, but what I normally would have done is to complete the preliminary prep steps for all of my edges. Doing so would have meant that I would have needed to increase my pillow pieces another 1/2" around to give room for folding down edges and still having an ample sewing allowance OR I could have just zigzagged my edges.

Celebrating the Life of a King

Today is the day set aside to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His birthday is actually January 15th, but the national holiday in honor of his birthday is always the 3rd Monday in January. There are people all over the world and more specifically, in our country, who choose not to recognize Dr. King's birthday or more importantly his work towards equality for all men and women, but that does not eradicate the fact that Dr. King and many others contributed greatly to the Civil Rights Movement.

So today, is not just a day off from work (for those who are off today), but a day set aside to remember the efforts of one man who had a vision.

Here is a video clip showing images from Dr. King's life and the unity of men and women of various backgrounds to bring about a change in society. In the background you will hear Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday" song. To view the lyrics, click here.

In addition, below is the animated movie "Our Friend Martin". It's about 1 hour long. It's a great movie to watch with your children, but the teacher in me always suggests previewing first and discuss, discuss, discuss because the true value will only be obtained through the discussion. Otherwise (for children), it's just like watching another cartoon. :-)

Smoothie Kick

I've been on a "Smoothie-for-Breakfast" kick lately. Partly because I'm on the 20/20 Challenge. Partly because I got on the scale and was taken back. Partly because finding something quick and healthy for breakfast has been a chore and although I can eat fruit, drinking smoothies has proven to be the best method for me of obtaining my fruit intake on a more regular basis.

Because I'm having to commute farther for work, I'm gone before 7 A.M. and don't have lunch until 12:40 P.M. so I need a breakfast that will last.

Here are some of the fruit smoothies that I've been trying lately:

Healthy Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie

With this smoothie, I was full until around 11:00 or so. Then I had a snack during my break.

Green Monster Smoothie

I can see why you wouldn't need to snack so much after this smoothie. It's packed of fruits and plus the spinach so I will definitely investigate green smoothies a bit more closely.

Very Berry Smoothie

Recipe:
2 cups almond milk
2 tablespoons vanilla yogurt
1 cup frozen blueberries
1 cup frozen strawberries
agave nectar

Directions:
Add all ingredients, except agave to blender. Blend until smooth. Add agave to taste and blend to mix.

* This recipe makes 2 servings, but my cousin, aunt, mom, and I shared this smoothie. However, we did not serve ourselves full portions as we drank this more for a breakfast drink rather than just for breakfast.

One thing I've learned about smoothie-making is that organization is key. Even though the smoothie itself is a quick breakfast, you need to have fruits and/or veggies prepped so that the entire process is quick. Plus, you have to add a little extra time to rinse out your blender so that you don't have a crazy mess when you return home. I usually keep frozen and fresh-frozen fruits in the freezer to speed up the process, but I do like this idea I found on Pinterest:

Earlier, I tried some to make smoothie or breakfast drinks using those health-food individual-sized packets you get from health food stores. I couldn't even get past the first couple of sips so I opted for real fruit and just to eat my veggies. Everything good for you doesn't have to taste bad.

When I get a little more organized I'll make some healthy snacks to tide me over before lunch. Until then, I've had prepackaged trail mix on hand. But I know I could make my own. Baby steps, here. Baby steps.

The Truth (or my truth) about Wigs

Here's the thing. I started wearing some type of weave for a protective style, especially during the harsh winter months. It started out with the afro twists, then it became the faux bun, and finally the half-wig. I really like all of those styles, but there's something about this wig that's kind of disturbing.

First off, let me repeat that personally I think the wig looks great. I know it's not mine and I'm really not trying to act like I grew this out of my head. I feel that my hair has been protected from the elements like I purposed, but I'm growing concerned that I may have developed another set of problems:

Because this is a half-wig, the front portion of my hair is exposed. Although the front portion is braided, I still feel like that part closest to my face is breaking or something. I'm not exactly sure yet, but I know it wasn't like that before. When I take my hair completely down I'm going to seriously investigate. If everything else is flourishing, except this part, then the wig still must go. I can't sacrifice my edges. ???
Although I love my hair and I know this wig isn't mine (genetically), I'm struggling about how to transition away from the wig. I mean, seriously, do I just take it off and sport a twist out that nobody's seen in forever? A twist out that's so so very different from the texture of this wig? Do I transition gradually and then burst out with my own do? I even did a self-talk and said, "During February - Black History Month - you will not sport synthetic hair" just to break this monster I've created. I've never had this thought before with any of my other styles, so what's the deal with this wig?
My aunt, another natural who's currently sporting a wig, asked me if I thought that we were both getting lazy. My hair texture takes a lot of work and honestly, sometimes I do desire a break here and there, but usually I just grab a good movie and do what I must. The thought of growing lazy is disturbing. Hummm....

A New Edition to the Family

It's wonderful to have a friend that truly gets you. One that can see something unique and know that you would love it...and then acts on it. I have a friend like that, MamaLutz. This past Saturday she had her "Me Day" (a day without the hubby and kiddos) and while perusing the shops, she saw a beautiful mannequin that she knew I would just love. She immediately took a picture of it and sent it to me on my cell phone. You know I wanted it. It was beautiful and all French-y, but the selling point was that it was on clearance! So, MamaLutz spared me from traveling and brought it back for me. That was the night I had the good coffee. Don't you just love friends like that? MamaLutz was given the honor of naming my new addition to the family.

So, I want to introduce you to Fifi, my French addition. Je parle un petit de français, but I think Mademoiselle Fifi and I will get along just fine. :-)

Happy Saturday!

Today, I slept in. Maybe it was because I've been kinda tired lately. Maybe because I took some cough medicine at 4 a.m. The kind of cough medicine that makes you super sleepy. Maybe, all of the above.

But, despite the really late start to the day, I finally got to do something I've been missing for a while. I spent the remainder of the afternoon and early evening with one friend and then the rest of the evening with another. Life happens and sometimes that means that you neglect to make time for people you really enjoy spending time with. So, I had to play catch up.

Friend #1 prepared an amazing lunch. I told her about my 20/20 challenge so she decided to prepare fish so I could have lunch with her. How sweet! This was our lunch:

Afterwards, we called ourselves "previewing" the Zumba dvds, but we ended up convincing ourselves that we could do this. What really happened was that we made it through the intro and learned all the basic steps, then we proceeded to last for maybe 8 minutes of the true 20-minute workout. We were all sweaty, but had so much fun. I've been wanting to try Zumba for a while now and have been planning to attend some classes when the instructor gets back from maternity leave.

So after I managed to recover from the Zumba lesson, I stopped at Friend #2's house. She spotted this amazing, amazing item for me (details later; you have to wait) and I went to pick it up. One fabulous cup of coffee later, being read to by a 6-year old, entertained by a 2-year old, and playing with a 5-month old, it was time to call it a night.

You know he tried to grab my wig? That was not going to happen! lol

Vegetarian Gumbo Recipe

So, if you've noticed my menu bars at the top of my blog, you have seen that I started yet another challenge. lol This 20 day challenge actually fits perfectly into my own purposes of trying to get re-aligned (for lack of a better word). One of the requirements is to eat meatless meals, with the exception of fish. So, I found this recipe to start out my work week.

Vegetarian Gumbo
Original recipe from Vegetarian Times

* One of the beauties of soups and such is that you use whatever you have on hand, so my version is tweaked a bit.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup flour
1 small onion, chopped
1 small green bell pepper, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 28-oz. can diced tomatoes
2 carrots, sliced
1 parsnip, diced
1 cup fresh or frozen sliced okra
4 cups of water or broth **
a big handful of collard greens, chiffonaded
ground cumin
dried oregano
cayenne pepper

Directions:
1. Stir together oil and flour in Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot until smooth. Cook over high heat 10 minutes, or until roux turns a dark caramel color, stirring constantly.
2. Add onion, bell pepper, and celery, and cook 5 minutes, or until vegetables are softened. Stir in all remaining ingredients and 4 cups broth. Season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and cook 40 minutes, or until carrots are tender. Serve over rice.

* If you recall, during the holidays I was blessed with like 4 big heads of collard greens. I cooked one head and then blanched the other 3 and froze them all. The collards I used in this recipe were some of the blanched ones.
* Also, although the original recipe calls for specific measurements on the spices, I rarely measure spices like this in a soup. I kinda know what I like so I just shake and stir. lol
** So I cheated a bit (already, I know!), but broth is so much better than just adding water to a soup and since I didn't have any low-sodium vegetable broth and I haven't even seen it in the city where I live, I had to use what I had which was chicken broth. Yeah, yeah, I know. Vegetable broth, next time. I promise.

One Small Space at a Time

Do you ever get that feeling AFTER you leave someone else's house that's all put together where you wished your space was complete, for once? I'm such an eclectic person and I never really wanted to go to one store and buy the whole package (nor could I afford to do so), but not doing that means that it really takes a lot of time to pull even one complete space together. Well, time out for the boo hoos and woe is me. I do have some control over my space and if I concentrate my energies on completing an entire space then I can get that feeling in my own home.

So back to the drawing board. Back to my "craft space". And let us focus on this piece of a wall. Two concentrated trips to IKEA and one trip to Lowe's for some screws has allowed me to work my way up this wall. Now I can properly display prints that are waiting to be sold or displayed at an event.

On to the next small space. The bathroom. Long ago, when I moved into this space, my artist auntie gave me two prints of her paintings. I finally found a frame shop I loved and could afford and had the prints matted and framed, but they've remained this way for far too long. That same IKEA/Lowe's trip and a bit of measuring here and there, allowed me to finally display these artistic pieces.

I almost had to climb in the bathtub to get these photos. lol

Hair Challenge 2011 Results

On December 31, 2010 I got my hair trimmed in preparation for Moptop Maven's 2011 Hair Challenge. As you know, my trim was more like a cut and I was a bit taken back, but I did have a fresh start. After the trim (ahem, cut), I was left with 2.5 - 3 inches of hair.

Over the past 12 months, I've learned a bit more about what my hair likes and doesn't like. I've learned who to trust with trimming my ends. I've learned that you don't have to spend a whole lot of money on products because if you're willing, there are plenty of wonderful items that you can make with basic ingredients.

My hair shrinks like no tomorrow and because of this, I prefer to have my hair blown out professionally before any trimming is done. Actually I don't even own a hand-held blow dryer, but even if I did, I would consult a professional. Theirs do better blow outs.

Below you'll find a slideshow of my 2011 Hair Challenge experience. The only month that's absent is April. That was the month I was sick so most likely my hair was a bit of a mess hiding under a headscarf. lol

So what were my end results in spite of several trimming episodes?
Front bangs: 5.5"
Sides: 5"
Back: 4.25"
Crown: 6"

So my hair did some growing (even if you can't always tell!) lol

More On Letting Go

For exactly 322 days, my life was literally turned upside down. Yes, I counted. Most of those days were dark, and now that I look back, even in the midst of the happy moments and days, that dark cloud loomed nearby. It was bad to say the least. But on the Day 323, I was delivered from that. And on Day 358 I was blessed with something new.

On Day 358 I was blessed with something new, but the effects of those 322 days were long-lasting. At some point I realized that I wasn't totally relaxed in the new situation because memories of the old kept creeping in. I recall a friend of mine who went through her own set of dark days and was blessed with a new situation too and in that new situation she kept rehashing all the bad stuff from the past. I didn't understand at the time, but when I realized it was happening to me too, all of a sudden I got it. I realized that the same advice that had been given to her, also applied to me.

At some point, I'm not sure when it happened, I realized that I was beginning to truly let go. I felt myself smiling more, laughing more, and becoming a little less burdened down with the burden that had really already been lifted. Isn't it amazing how you can be technically free and yet not free?

In the spirit of continuing to let go, I decided that I must face the thing that I had been avoiding all year - the literal baggage from those 322 days. Until now, I didn't want to see anything that reminded me of those 322 days so everything that I walked away with on Day 322 was still in the spot where I first placed it. In the trunk of my car! Seriously.

The new year is fast approaching and I'm determined not to tote that baggage from the year before. Those 322 days were not my fault, but my response to them is what I'm held accountable for. Just to think of all the extra gas (among other things) I've spent because of carrying this heavy load. So, I cleaned out the trunk of my car this week, and already I feel so much better.

The Holiday Crafting Madness is Over (I think)

So, even though I finished this family order on Christmas Eve, I decided to wait until after the holidays to get the images ready. Well, the other part of this very real truth is that my house was torn down. You know what it's like sitting in yarn for over a week, crafting like crazy? Switching colors, clipping woven ends? Yeah, I know you know. Then I had those piles of clean laundry still not folded and put away, a cake in the oven, and meanwhile packing for a trip to see my grandma, so needless to say there was a lot going on.

One of my largest "9th hour" orders for this season was a family set of bearded hats. Bearded earflap hats. So I made all the beanie parts first, went back and added the ear flaps and the braids/UNC logo, then I crocheted all of the beards and sewed in a pair of buttons inside each hat so that the beards would be detachable. I could literally feel the heat on my crochet hooks. lol

Well, the order is done and here they are:

You'll just have to imagine the UNC hat with the beard...That's for Papa Bear. I think he can grow his own. lol

At 7:15 p.m. tonight, I had officially finished all my Christmas orders! All of them have been delivered, except one that is finished but wasn't for Christmas anyways. And now I will rest my hand up so I can complete a toddler blanket after the holidays. In the meantime, just getting ready for Christmas dinner with grandma on tomorrow evening. The cake's in the oven now. :-)

A Word About OT

So as you know, I finally started OT (Occupational Therapy) the other week. I have 2 sessions a week and it has been quite interesting. The therapists do stretching exercises on my hand. I have my arm strapped into this weird contraption filled with what feels like sand. Then the "sand" starts blowing around in there and the heat comes on. It's relaxing and my hand does feel better afterwards. There's also this ultrasound treatment. The ultrasound gel is warm and feels like some type of massage.

Sometimes I have to pinch through this tough puddy and pinch out all of the objects embedded in there. They even have these large clothespins that vary in degree of strength. It's amazing how difficult it can be just to open clothespins that are wound extra tight.

I went again this morning and had to squeeze this gel from one bottle to another. My hand was shaking because it is weak. That's proof in point. After that exercise, the doctor gave permission for me to get some kind of steroid patch treatment. There are little batteries inside that cause this little light to flash. The medication seeps through your skin in intervals and when the patch knows that it is finished, the lights quit blinking and you can take it off. It takes anywhere from 2.5 - 4 hours to complete. No, you don't have to stay in the therapists office for that time; just long enough to get it on.

I'm glad that my hand is getting the necessary treatment and I hope it's worth my desire not to get the quickie cortisone shot. Yesterday someone told me to pray that God will give me another way to sleep. As a side-sleeper, that's how I got into this jam. I tend to sleep with my hand underneath my face. My first reply was that it wasn't like I was intentionally sleeping on my hand. My mom tells me to remember that when I get my bill. I guess she has a point. I better start praying now.

Now, back to crafting. I have a goal that I really want to meet. Then I can show you all the goodies! Plus, I have 3 heads of collards waiting on me and a sour cream pound cake to make by tomorrow night.

Holiday Crocheting - Phase I (Sneak Peak)

The holidays are almost upon us. Personally I haven't really done any "holiday" crafting like most. However, in the last week I have received orders from people locally that have given me an opportunity to craft during this season. In addition, I finally started OT on my hand so now I can officially get back to crocheting - at least in spurts. Actually, it seems the crocheting might actually be helping. :-)

The laundry is in the washing machine; the dishes in the dishwasher; the trash just taken to the dump (yeah, I live outside the city limits, so I have to do this task myself). Anyhoo, just wanted to give you a quick view into the orders that have been completed. I didn't have the privilege of using natural light on some because I finished so late in the evening, but it's a photo nonetheless. :-)

Spreading the Joy of Crochet

Earlier today a co-worker had asked me to show her how to make baby hats. As my crochet buddies know, it all begins with a circle. So I was able to show her how to make the circle and how to increase. Then we discussed crochet terminology and how to read a beginner's hat pattern.

Then, this evening I had a blast hanging out with C showing her how to make crocheted facial scrubbies. We also practiced reading through dish cloth patterns. I had so much fun and look forward to the next time. I love crochet! And, I love it when other people love it too. :-)

p.s. I finally started OT on my hand last week! Yay! And I have received an abundance of crochet orders. Can't wait to fill you in when I'm able to catch my breath. :-)

Party Sandwiches

Tomorrow we're having a holiday celebration on our hall. The baked goods were the first to get taken so I ended up with the party sandwiches. My mom said I should have told her earlier and she would have made some homemade chicken salad, so I opted for what I knew best: Jalapeño Pimento Cheese sandwiches and Ham and Cheese Sandwiches. Well, I ended up doing some turkey and some ham. That way I've covered us all - the vegetarian co-worker who does eat cheese, those that don't do pork, and everyone else.

The Jalapeño Pimento cheese spread that I used is so good. It's not real spicy, but the peppers gives it a little kick. Even my mom loves it and uses it as grilled cheese. At her suggestion, I cut all the ends off of the bread "so the sandwiches will be prettier," she said. Then, again at her suggestion, I saved all my ends because "you could make homemade croutons," she added. So into the Ziploc bag the ends went. I don't have a final picture to show you of these sandwiches because I'll finish them in the morning. I was afraid the bread would get soggy overnight.

Now onto the other sandwiches - the Turkey or Ham and Cheese Sandwiches.

These are the party sandwiches my mom used to make for every single event she hosted or participated in for my entire childhood. We even make these as appetizers before holiday meals, except we use the tiny pull-apart rolls instead of these ones I used.

Ham and Cheese Party Sandwiches
Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened

3 tablespoons poppy seeds

1 onion, grated

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons prepared Dijon-style mustard

2 (12 ounce) packages white party rolls

1/2 pound chopped cooked ham

5 ounces shredded Swiss cheese

Directions:

1.	Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2.	In a medium bowl, mix together butter, poppy seeds, onion, Worcestershire sauce and prepared Dijon-style mustard.
3.	Slice rolls in half horizontally and set aside tops. Spread bottoms with the butter mixture. Top with ham and Swiss cheese. Replace tops.
4.	Arrange rolls in a single layer in a medium baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven 10 to 12 minutes, until rolls are lightly browned and cheese is melted.

Now tomorrow I will heat them for a few seconds in the microwave just to have them a little warmed.

p.s. I also have to bring a gift for an exchange on tomorrow. I'm bringing one of my crocheted scarves. Sewing my label onto it now...

Curried Lentil Soup

I recently purchased this new cookbook (I know, I know I promised myself that I wouldn't indulge this way, but I couldn't resist) from Ollie's. It's Better Homes and Gardens' 365 Vegetarian Meals. It such a wonderful cookbook filled with simple and yet delicious-sounding (I've only cooked one dish so I can't truly confirm from actual cooking experience) vegetarian meals. If you're vegan, it lists a vegan alternative to that same dish at the bottom of the page. I'm sure this book can be purchased in many locations and it is listed on Amazon, but I found it at Ollie's discount store for less than $5. It's definitely worth it.

Breakfasts are the meals that I struggle with. If you don't want to eat pork at every meal - bacon, sausage, ham or you don't want to load up on sweet stuff - danishes, donuts, muffins, it's kind of hard. Oatmeal everyday will not work for me. Let's be real. But this cookbook has a whole section of breakfast ideas that I can't wait to try out. And no, they're not all fruit smoothies. LOL

Ok, back to the post title. I just made this Curried Lentil Soup dish in the crockpot last night and I'm loving it! You know I've got to share:

Curried Lentil Soup
Ingredients:
1 pound of sweet potatoes (2-3), peeled and coarsely chopped
1 cup brown lentils, rinsed and drained
1 medium onion, chopped
1 medium jalapeño pepper, seeded and finely chopped
3 cloves of garlic, minced
3 14-oz cans of vegetable broth*
1 14.5 oz can of diced tomatoes, undrained (no-salt added)
1 tablespoon curry powder (I used my Blue Mountain Jamaican curry powder)
1 tsp. fresh ginger, grated
salt**

Directions:
In a 4-5 qt slow cooker, combine all ingredients. Stir well. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours. Voila!

* All the vegetable broths I've ever seen are loaded (I mean loaded) with sodium. Yuck! Then recently I discovered a sale at Harris Teeter on Pacific Natural Foods Organic Low-Sodium vegetable broth. I happened to have that when I discovered this recipe.
** Because I used low-sodium broth and no-salt added tomatoes, I had to add a little salt to the dish before the cooking time was up. But honestly, I'd rather add my own.

This dish is flavorful with a little kick to it. I will make this again.

The IKEA Experience

Going to IKEA, is an experience. Remember I went once before, in Ohio? But I couldn't bring anything back since I was riding the bus. Finally I got to bring home some of what I've been wanting for a while. Some things are meant to be turned in to small gifts. Others are meant to help make home life a little better.

These are some of the things I purchased at IKEA:

These magnetic canisters to store small crafting supplies. I also purchased the magnetic strip a.k.a. the magnetic knife holder.

A chopping board because the one I have been using has fallen completely apart. I've been chopping on a quarter of the board for too long now. This one is large (which I love) and was under $10.

Well, because I need to see.

Don't tell my family, but this set was $0.49! I plan to crochet or knit a dishcloth to complete the set and give them as gifts.

Aren't these picture ledges great? Now I can put my art prints on these in my craft room until the next chance to display them. Trying to get more of a studio feel in there.

Not only did I get to visit this wonderful place, but I also had the opportunity to reconnect with a childhood friend and make up for the baby-shower I missed since I was vending at the festival that same weekend. I also got a chance to hang out with one of her college friends. We had a great time!

After the IKEA experience, I met with one of my college friends and got to see her new little one who decided to arrive a month early. He's a bit tiny, but so super cute! I would have snapped his photo, but he was sleeping so well and I didn't want to disturb him with lighting.

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Now, when I say "homemade," I do not mean starting with fresh tomatoes. Let's go ahead and get that clear, but other than that, it's what we call "homemade" around my family.

This is my mom's recipe that we've been making ever since I can remember. It's the only way I've prepared spaghetti sauce and now I want to share it with you. The only thing I can't share is the spice measurements; we just shake and taste. :-)

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce
Ingredients:
1 (26.5 oz) can of spaghetti sauce (i.e. Hunts or Del Monte)
1 can of diced tomatoes or peeled whole tomatoes
onion, chopped
green bell pepper, chopped
garlic, minced
1 bay leaf
chili powder
Worcestershire sauce
oregano
black pepper
salt* (if needed)
sugar * (if salt is added)

Directions:

Sauté onions, bell pepper, and garlic in skillet * or **. (Remember to add garlic last; if you add garlic at the same time as the onions, the garlic will burn.)
*If using meat (ground hamburger or turkey): Add ground meat into the skillet with the sauteed veggies. Cook until browned all the way through. Drain and then add to a large sauce pot.
** If not using meat or using a meat substitute like Boca's Meatless Crumbles, then cook everything in the same large sauce pot.
In the sauce pot, add the can of spaghetti sauce, canned diced or whole tomatoes, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, bay leaf, oregano, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low or simmer.
If necessary, add a little water so that the sauce is not too thick.
If using a meat substitute, add it in after all the other ingredients have been added. Adjust seasonings if necessary.
Simmer until all flavors have meshed well. (I usually just go and do something else and simmer for a long while.)

* Here's the thing about the salt: I didn't need any this time, depending on how much salt is in the other ingredients. However, my mother's secret is this: Anytime salt is added, a pinch of sugar should be added as well.

[I used the meatless crumbles and loved it in this dish! I also sprinkled a little crushed red pepper and cheese on top. Oooh la la.]

Oh yeah, be sure to take the bay leaf out in the end. lol

The New Do (and then some)

You know I can't sport a new hair do, have you see it, and mention nothing about it. So, I must confess: I bought a wig. My very first one. I "forgot" to tell my mom and when I stopped by her house, she was like, "What is that?" I was also nervous wearing it work because I didn't know if the kids would crack on me, ignore me, or what. Instead, mostly compliments and a few wig jokes. Now I wonder, what exactly is wig etiquette? If someone says, "I like your hair" do you just say thank you and keep going?

Anyhoo, so I'm wearing this wig as yet another protective hair style choice during this winter because getting braids again is just too expensive right now. I watched a lot of Youtube videos and then made my choice. It's synthetic. Honestly, a human-hair wig is a little too creepy for me.

What else have I done?
I tried a new shampooing regime:

Pre-treat scalp with antiseptic mouthwash. Let it sit for about 20 minutes before washing. (Makes the scalp feel tingly and good.)
Washed with Shea Moisture's "Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo".
Deep conditioned with a mixture of coconut milk, vegetable glycerine, and avocado oil. (Hair was super soft afterwards. Will try other combinations later.)
Applied shealoe before braiding my hair.

What is shealoe and how did I make it?
Shealoe is a mixture of raw unrefined shea butter and aloe vera juice. I melted 4 oz. of shea butter in a double boiler, poured it into a glass bowl, added 4 oz. of aloe vera juice and blended it until it made a slightly creamy mixture.

I put the bowl in the freezer a couple of times to help with the consistency, but I left it in too long and had to reheat the mixture and start over. Got it right the second time. You have to keep this mixture in the refrigerator*, but it is super creamy and cool to work with in my hair.

The next time I'll probably add my favorite essential oils.

Don't you just love how I reuse old containers? I have soo many Shea Moisture containers like this.

* Note: putting the shealoe in the refrigerator will cause it to look hard like in this photo, but it melts in your hands so nicely.

Maybe there's an inner mixtress in me after all. lol

AE: What is it that you do/make?

TR: I am so excited to finally “open the doors” to my newest labour of love. I have been crocheting for 10 years and absolutely love it. I don’t use patterns and I just love seeing my ideas come to life in the most beautiful ways. I am based out of Torbay, Newfoundland, Canada and it is no surprise that inspiration for my shop name came from living so close to the wonderful Atlantic Ocean. I wanted to connect my work to my home with each collection piece being named after a part of our sea-bound culture.

AE: How did you get started/What is the motivation behind your work?

TR: My love for crocheting came from the most unexpected place, at work. At that time, I was in university completing my bachelor degree in social work and was employed at a woman’s shelter in Iqaluit, Nunavut. The women at the shelter crocheted together and during this time shared their most personal stories and journeys. These women reached out to include me and taught me how to create the most beautiful treasures. I have been addicted ever since. I have continued working towards creating social justice for all as a social worker and have recently convocated with a master degree in social work.

But right now, as mother to two beautiful children, I am inspired to create specialty items that families will treasure for year to come; items that will become a part of a family's memories. I design classic pieces with a modern twist that are perfect as photography props, as gifts, and just make each day oh so special. My pieces are also full of charm and whimsy and are the perfect specialty item for any decor.

My pieces remind me of my grandmother, of a hot cup of tea, and of snuggles under a granny square blanket – all crafted with love with memories. This is the feeling I want to share with my customers; this is where my inspiration comes from. I try to capture this feeling in each and every piece I create from my pixie-styled newborn hats to my granny square pillow covers.

Christmas on the Square 2011

I had a blast at "Christmas on the Square" today. I did make some sales...enough to cover my booth fee and make some profit. I still brought back most of what I had, but I returned home feeling more uplifted than before.

There is definitely an art to being a craft vendor, and honestly, it's an art that I'm willing to learn. Having an Etsy shop is great, but if you can't bring sales there, it's kind of depressing. But vending is a craft high (as long as you don't lose financially by participating). My location was in the center of the downtown square and I was located between two very nice vendors. We shared ideas, discussed future vending opportunities, swapped contact information, and had a great time.

I had the pleasure of sharing my space with some members of the photography club and they were such great company. I also had a friend who stopped by to help me out. It was really something special.

As I was focusing on vending and not photography, I captured the quickest photo of Santa that I could. Please pardon the sun bursting through. Next time I'll tell Santa to turn the other way. lol

Remember, I'm not an "animal person" and I've been known to be terribly afraid of dogs, but I think I'm getting better with that because I actually let the little puppies dressed in the Santa suits come near me (but I did not touch - not that brave yet). And I had to get this darling little pony/horse. When he first passed by we had all thought he was a big dog, but realized he was not. Especially when the other "real" dogs started barking. lol Isn't he gorgeous?

And finally, I got to hold this sweet baby boy. You don't know this but I rarely hold people's babies. Like almost never. He reached right into my arms though and I couldn't resist. Plus it gave his mom the opportunity to help her daughter try on hats. Isn't he precious?

I had a great time and I'm looking forward to more crafting scenes!

Sweet Chili Lime Tofu with Steamed Vegetables and Quinoa

I will say that I was a bit apprehensive about the tofu because I've never really liked it. Just a texture thing, I guess. However, I'm always willing to try new things and let me say, I think I've found my favorite way to cook tofu (out of perhaps the two or three ways I've tried it - lol)!

This recipe (or my modified version of this recipe) is out of this world! I'm so glad that one of my former students photographed this dish, which was her Thanksgiving dinner since she's vegan, and posted it on Facebook. Would I make this dish again, YES! Now let me skip to the chase and give you my modified version of this recipe.

Sweet Chili Lime Tofu with Steamed Vegetables and Quinoa

Ingredients:

1 Block Tofu, extra firm, 14 oz

Sweet Chili Lime Sauce
3 Tbs Sugar
3 Tbs Reduced Sodium soy sauce
1 3/4 Tbs Fresh Lime Juice
1/2 Zest of the Lime
1/2 tsp Red Chili Flakes
1 Clove Garlic, minced
1/4 tsp Salt
4 Mint Leaves, chiffonaded

Quinoa
3/4 Cup Quinoa, rubbed/rinsed in cool water, drained
1/2 Zest Lime
1/4 tsp Salt
1 1/3 Cup Water

Vegetables
1 bag of steamable vegetable medley (I used Birdseye's Steamfresh mixtures - Broccoli, carrots, sugar snap pea, & water chestnuts)
1 red bell pepper
1 Pinch Salt
1 tsp Lime Juice
olive oil

Directions:

Combine all the ingredients for the quinoa in a pot that has a tight fitting lid. Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce heat to low. Cook for 20 minutes, then turn off heat. Do not open lid until ready to serve.
Prepare the sweet chili lime sauce by whisking all of the ingredients together until the sugar and salt is dissolved.
Drain tofu and cut it into small triangles.
Heat a well-seasoned cast iron or non-stick skillet over medium heat. "Dry fry" the tofu by placing it in the skillet and pressing lightly on it to squeeze the juice out of it. As the juice evaporates, the tofu will become more firm.
Add the sauce and stir to coat the tofu. Turn off the heat and allow the sauce to become a glaze.
Meanwhile sauté the red bell peppers in a small skillet and steam the vegetables. When the vegetables are steamed, add them to the red bell peppers, add a pinch of salt and some lime juice.
Now you are ready to plate your dish, layering each dish with quinoa, vegetables, and topping it with the tofu.

The sauce is out of this world. It could stand alone against the vegetables, or with chicken or shrimp if you prefer.

Matzo Ball Soup

Why? I just wanted to see what it tasted like. lol

Matzo balls are a traditional Jewish dumpling made from matzo meal. It is cooked in a broth. This dish is typically served during the celebration of the Passover. In keeping with the Jewish laws of Kashrut, no butter is used in this dish.

My co-worker asked me to get a box mix for her when I was out of town, and I just decided to get a box for myself. You know, just to try it. The broth was very flavorful and the dumpling was very soft/sponge-like and flavorful as well. For me, though, the texture would take some getting used to.

Funk No More

I must admit that I've been sort of in a craft funk lately. It started with the hand. Then as the holidays approached it got worse because I had to yet again put off those seasonal projects that you've always wanted to try but only apply during this season. With the bum hand I was missing it again. Then other stuff crept in and I could feel my mojo being sapped away.

Remember I read that book. When it was over, I couldn't find another good one to fill its place. I started relearning/practicing my Spanish through the Coffee Break Spanish podcasts. Yes, I'm on lesson 40 of 80. I cleaned out my pantry and rearranged all the items on each shelf by their style (i.e. Italian, Asian, and Latin American inspired ingredients; healthy grains (steel cut oats, bulgur wheat, etc); sweet stuff).

Seriously y'all. I even started growing my fingernails! What? Fingernail growing is pretty but not practical. Then my thumbnail broke all the way down and I did one of those super irritating girly shrieks in the grocery store. I was instantly ashamed of myself. Needless to say all the nails were trimmed immediately. lol

Well, I kept it a secret as long as I could, but some time ago I applied to vend at our local "Christmas on the Square." I didn't hear anything for weeks and when Thanksgiving was almost here, I couldn't imagine what was going on with my application. I mean the event is this coming Saturday. Anyhoo, the chairperson had been out of town and when I reached her Monday, I found out that Artistic Expressions by Elisabeth had been accepted! And not only that, she gave me one of the best locations at the event. Right in the heart of our city square!

Now I have some last minute preps to do, hope I can round up at least one friend to help me man the table, and I'm crossing my fingers that I can destash my items on that occasion. I've got some new things in mind and it would be so liberating to see my previously created items go to a new home where they can be loved as much as I loved creating them at the time.

Also, OT starts on the hand in a couple of weeks. Maybe I can get even more relief and a full recovery.

Until then, I've got work to do!

Ayana had this on her blog. I thought it was pretty cool and since it's been quite some time since I've done an activity like this, I thought I'd give it a try. So here goes:

A. Age: 35. Birthday: 9-25-76.
B. Bed size: Queen, finally! lol
C. Chore that you hate: It seems I hate the other half of most chores: Washing clothes (fine); Folding and putting them back (hate). Washing dishes (ok). Putting them away (why bother). But, I force myself to do them because otherwise I'd have to evict myself.
D. Dogs: No. Never.
E. Essential start to your day: Hot shower. I'm so not a morning person, that I need something to wake me up.
F. Favorite color: It used to be purple, but now I like just about every color but those melony - peachy ones.
G. Gold or Silver: Silver. But really? Are we talking colors or jewelry here? Then I'd have to change my answer and say white gold.
H. Height: 5'2
I. Instruments you play: technically piano and flute. I started taking piano lessons in 5th grade through some point in college. Piano will always be my favorite instrument. I guess I should practice. I got the bright idea to take flute lessons in my adult life. Love the flute with the piano. Gorgeous music. Got through a book and called it quits although at the time I didn't realize I was doing that. Scheduling practice time was a bit much.

Thanksgiving 2011

Every Thanksgiving Day we have a church service at 10:00 A.M. So this year was no different. I enjoyed the service, as it makes us stop and give God thanks for all the things that He has done for us. Really, "Thanksgiving" is every day, but it's nice to have a day to stop and reflect. So as people gave their personal testimonies, it made me recount those things that I know God brought me through this year:

Remember the hospital scare back in the Spring? Going in for an out-patient procedure and ending up in ICU? That was God that brought me through that. Remember the job that almost took me out? Yes, God brought me through that too, AND, blessed me with another one that I didn't see coming.

In the midst of everything we go through, there are so many things to be thankful for, both big and small.

After the Thanksgiving Day Service, I got home just in time to meet part of my family. My cousin, whom I will refer to as "The Vegan" (he's not really vegan, but over the past 8 years he has fluctuated between vegan and vegetarianism that we never know what to prepare him) decided to ride down with his mom and sister for Thanksgiving. He decided like 1 AM on Thanksgiving Day so you know there was very little for him to eat.

We had our play arguments over which foods he would eat. He fought his sister over her cupcakes, which are technically vegetarian, but come on - not really healthy. lol

Then he made a attack plan on the macaroni (since he's back to eating cheese now). We told him there would be a fight to the end on that one too.

Meanwhile, his friend had fun playing dress up in my crocheted stash.

Finally, the rest of the family and a few friends arrived and this is basically what was served:

Loads of laughter, deep debates, requests for coffee, hot apple cider, and take out plates galore. It was a great day that I was happy to celebrate with my family and friends.

* I'm also thankful for a dish washer. :-)
